A new name

The Gentiles shall see your righteousness and all the kings, your glory. You shall be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord will name. Isaiah 62:2

Those that don’t know God see our right standing with him and the work he’s done in our lives — bringing him glory.

He adopts us, reconciling us to our originally-intended relationship with him.  He gives us a new name which associates us as his — His delight is in us.  Our new name also disassociates us with our past and our worship of the world’s system.

Our simple faith and belief that Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected for our sins brings us into a right relationship with him.  That simple belief and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit literally changes our lives — transforming it from a place of darkness to a place of glory for God — a beautiful temple where he can live.

Our new name signifies a new ownership and caretaker of our lives.  An adoption by a father who loves us no matter what.   As his sons and daughters we have a new heritage in him.

Lord, I pray that you would help me recognize that I have a new name, given by you because of our relationship.  You have claimed me as your own and have re-named me because you delight in me.  You re-named me to break me from my connection with the past and as a promise of a life filled with your goodness and promises.  Help me to clearly understand this, meditate upon it so that I can know its full reality in my life.

The man asked him, “What is your name?”  “Jacob,” he answered.  Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.”  Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”  But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”  Then he blessed him there.  Genesis 32:27-28
